• Leyland Dafs UK-built middleweight trucks will come with the option of low emission Euro-2 engines by next April, well ahead of the 1995/96 deadline, At the same time the Leyland-built 50 and 60 Series (Freighter) will undergo a minor cab facelift and interior update.
Daf has already unveiled Euro-2 versions of its 62-litre engine (CM 16-22 September); these will also be offered as a cleaner alternative to Euro-1 power units in the current 60 Series Freighter and 65 Series 17-tonners launched at Scottish IRTE in September.
A version of Cummins sixlitre B160 engine, certified to Euro-2, will be offered as an option in the 45 Series Roadrunner and 50 Series lightweight Freighter.
The charge-cooled B160, with its Bosch VP14 in-line injection pump, requires no changes for Euro-2 apart from its injection timing, but lower-rated B130 and B145 versions of the B Series are likely to need chargecooling and in-line high-pres
sure fuel pumps, in place of their current rotary pumps, in order to make it to Euro-2 in 1995.
Leyland Daf and Cummins claim there will be no fuel consumption penalty in meeting Euro-2 standards, although Iveco's engine development boss Giovanni Biaggini warned a fortnight ago that consumption could increase between 4 and 8% for Euro-2.
Whatever the final figure, Leyland Daf will be charging environmentally conscious operators a premium of around £2,000 for its Euro-2 option.
