For cyclists, collisions with lorries are far more likely to prove fatal than collisions with cars: in 2009, a cyclist was killed in nearly 26% of all serious accidents with trucks compared to just under 3% for cyclists involved with cars. Equally, lorries are involved in just 1.7% of slight injuries to cyclists, but 19% of cyclist fatalities. In Britain in 2009, cyclists made up 0.5% of traffic, yet accounted for 5% of deaths and 11% of serious injuries on roads. A total of 104 people were killed while cycling on roads and 2,710 suffered serious injuries such as paralysis, loss of limbs or serious head trauma. While the overall number of road casualties has been decreasing year on year, the number of cyclist deaths and injuries has not. In 2009, the number of serious injuries sustained by cyclists increased by 6%.
