• A Harleston, Norfolk, firm was granted an operator's licence by the Eastern Area deputy LA at Ipswich last week—but a stipulation was made that the company's fleet of vehicles must have a complete inspect ion.
The application, by Howard Harvestore Ltd, was for an operator's licence for five vehicles, with provision for extending the fleet to 10 within the next four years. The company at present holds an interim operator's licence for five vehicles.
Mr Alan Eades. representing the
company, said that it manufactured, marketed and erected tower silos all over the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. It was a subsidiary of an American company which had a paid-up share capital of 3'm.
The silos were transported to the various sites by haulage contractors and the company wished to have an operator's licence to enable service crews to travel about the country, erecting and servicing the silos. The crews needed to carry heavy jacks and other equipment, including generators. and would need to use lorries with an unladen weight of 3 tons. The company's transport manager, Mr Donald Ives, said all the company's vehicles were serviced at a depot at West Horndon, Essex.
Some of them were frequently out in different parts of the country erecting silos and the company was planning to arrange for vehicles approaching a 4000-mile service to have the work done at main Ford depots in different parts of the country. The lorries already had daily and weekly inspections.
The deputy LA, Mr R. J. Kidner, said that although the present system for servicing five vehicles was adequate he was not satisfied that the system would work as efficiently when the fleet was increased.
"However, I will grant the licence but make an order for an inspection of the complete fleet to be carried out between November and January 1971 and also for a further inspection to be carried out at the latest between December 1971 and January 1972". he said.
