ki West Midlands Police have stopped over 2,500 drivers—and prosecuted 1,109 of them—since February, after videoing them using a mobile phone white driving.
Under the campaign, named Operation Breeze, the prosecuted drivers were issued with a .£30 on-the-spot fine, and 17 drivers are to appear in court for serious driving offences.
Operation Breeze aims to highlight the dangers of using mobile phones while driving, says Sergeant Dave Swift, road policing policy officer for West Midlands Police. "One of our key aims is to reduce death and serious injury on the region's roads and motorways." The operation runs until the end of April, and will be repeated again in the autumn.
11 Eight million drivers admit to using mobile phones while driving, a survey has found. They would be liable to prosecution under the new mobile phone ban to be Introduced shortly.
