• An alarm system that sounds a warning if a would-be intruder releases an anaesthetic spray into a vehicle could prevent truck drivers falling victim to gas attacks.
EtherAlert, which was originally designed to help combat caravan and motorhome robberies, in which narcotic gas sprays are used to incapacitate occupants, can also be used in truck cabs, say its designers.
When certain sprays are released into confined spaces, they anaesthetise the sleeping occupants, enabling robberies to take place without their knowledge.
EtherAlert detects such gases at tow levels and emits a 105dB siren to deter intruders, wake occupants and warn others close-by. It is powered by a 12V electronic control unit and has been designed for easy and flexible installation.
"It is certainly applicable for trucks as well," says Nereus Alarms director, Kevin Stockwell. "We discovered this was a problem for truck drivers as well as caravanners."
