MR. MARPLES plans to invite road transport industry leaders to meet him to discuss vehicle maintenance, and he is also .considering inviting them to a future spot check to see the condition of lorries for themselves. He announced this on Monday after attending one of the 18 roadside checks which were used for the London area's two-day blitz on goods vehicles this week.
The Minister was reported as saying that he was concerned at the " very sorry story "revealed by the first of the special roadside checks he has instituted for this summer.
The checkpoint attended by the Minister was on A40 near Northolt aerodrome. Of 70 lorries stopped, 47 were found by Ministry examiners to have defects.
