The oil level on the Clydesdale can be checked through a panel in the cab and the water level in the radiator 'header tank behind the cab. In order to tilt the cab the gearlever gaiter has to be pushed down and two bolts removed from underneath the cab. Once this is done, however, the cab balances easily on torsion bars.
The routine maintenance programme is based on 4,000 miles per month. Oil and filter changes should be carried out at this interval, while greasing is recommended to be carried out each week. Air reservoirs should be drained each week, or each day if the vehicle is being operated in conditions of hard frost. Access to the fuses and clutch hydraulic reservoir is from within the cab— the clutch, incidentally, is selfadjusting.
The load-sensing valve fitted to the tipper chassis in the range has to be checked after the springs have settled (about 5,000 miles) and it should then be checked again after 25,000 miles (or six months) to see that the flexible pivot connections are in good condition. After 50,000 miles (or one year) the valve should be checked for air leaks.
