No axle-loading change
• Mr Peter Walker, the Environment Secretary, this week turned down a call for an amendment to the axle loading requirements for heavy goods vehicles.
Expert advice was that the present plating limits set maxima consistent with safety, he said, though he was ready to consider evidence to the contrary.
Mr Leslie Huckfield (Labour, Nuneaton), who had raised the matter, suggested a possible re-examination of the margins of this legislation particularly in view of some of the unnecessary difficulties caused to operators.
Mr Walker replied that there was a danger that a maximum tolerance level tended to become the norm. Mr Walker refused to do this and said he was sure that the new chairman would see that the undertaking was conducted on a sound commercial basis.
