• Buses will run in each direction along Piccadilly and a new road will be cut through the Eros island if, after consultations with all concerned, the Greater London Council accepts a proposal recently formulated. This envisages the introduction of an against-the-flow bus lane between Piccadilly Circus and St James's Street.
The proposal would enable buses to travel westwards along Piccadilly in a special lane separated from eastbound traffic by a kerbed strip. The new road to be cut through the centre island in Piccadilly Circus would not affect the Eros statue. The bus lane would cost about £60,000, but it is estimated that reduced running costs and increased passenger patronage could save London Transport about £1000 a week.
If the proposal is accepted, buses will no longer run along Pall• Mall and St James's Street.
