nONVERSION of three C-licensed vehicles to B operation was granted on Monday in Edinburgh by Mr. W. F. Quin, the Scottish Licensing Authority. The application by William Baxter and Son Ltd., of Tranent, was for conversion of nine tippers. based on an alleged shortage of these vehicles in the Midlothian and East Lothian areas, allied to a considerable volume of new work pending.
Mr. Quin, however, refused to accept the arguments in favour of full conversion and limited the grant to three vehicles.
On behalf of Baxter, Mr. J. B. T. Loudon asked that the grant should be made in such a way as to spread the use of the tonnage over the nine vehicles. It would be difficult, and indeed impossible, he said, to allocate three of the nine vehicles to operate on B carrying and at the same time retain the flexibility required in a contracting fleet.
