THE DEPARTMENT of Transport this week asked the construction industry for its views on possible schemes for injecting private capital into new road schemes.
It wants replies within a month, and is considering the possibility of starting one or two experimental schemes early next year.
The arrangements would involve the companies — either existing construction companies or companies formed especially for the construction of privatelyfinanced roads — providing the finance, and for the DTp to pay royalties based on traffic flows over the next 15 years.
The DTp says it expects it would apply to schemes of over £10m.
Whatever is decided, the DTp would retain full authority for route selection and planning, and initially at least, construction companies would be required to submit two tenders.
