A DRAFT CODE of practice giving practical guidance on the operational provisions of the 1981 Dangerous Substances (Conveyance by Road in Road Tankers and Tank Containers) Regulations has been published in a consultative document by the Health and Safety Commission.
The regulations, which (with certain exceptions) came into force on January 1 this year, extended and updated legislation on the carriage of a wide range of dangerous substances in road tankers with a capacity of more than 3cum (3.9cuya
The draft approved code also gives guidance on compliance with certain sections of the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act in relation to the compatibility of multi-loads and the loading and unloading of dangerous substances.
The operational requirements in the 1981 Regulations cover information to be obtained by the operator about the loads to be conveyed; information in writing to be available during conveyance; precautions against fire and explosion; and the instruction and training of drivers.
