A VEHICLE observer corps is now in ra. operation in Grimsby, run by members of the Grimsby sub-area of the Road Haulage Association. The Grimsby Borough police have taken an active part in making the necessary arrangements and the scheme is run with their full co-operation. It is honed in due course that other organizations concerned with road transport and with vehicle security in general will add their support to the scheme.
Among other things. a notice to drivers of commercial vehicles hasbeen sent by the chief constable of Grimsby to lodging houses in the district where drivers are accustomed to stay. They are urged in the event of the theft of their vehicle or its load to report to the police at the earliest possible moment, even before letting their employers know.
As soon as a goods vehicle with or without a load is reported stolen, -the police will get in touch with the corps leader, who will arrange to pass the information on to all the members. Cars will be sent out with drivers and observers to patrol pre-arranged areas in an endeavour to track down the vehicle' Contact will be made with the police as soon as a stolen vehicle is spotted.
The Grimsby scheme will provide increased coverage in the East Midland area following the introduction of vehicle observer corps in the Boston. Derby and Scunthorpe districts. It will provide an additional link in the network of corps which have already been set up in a number of other towns and districts following the successful experiment of the first corps in London.
