I The National Stolen Lorry Load )esk (NSLLD) will be expanded later his year in an attempt to cut the ;oaring rate of lorry hijackings and hefts.
This autumn the Metropolitan )olice will take over the running of he desk from Essex police, following in increase in awareness among the )olice and the Home Office about his type of theft and the poor recov;ry rates currently achieved.
Project leader, DCI David Ryan, of he serious and organised crime branch at New Scotland Yard, says: "The Met is committed to continuing the good work undertaken by Essex police. The scope of the desk will be significantly expanded and technology introduced to improve service levels. The name of the desk will be changed to reflect proposed new developments."
In 2000 about 3,500 incidents of truck, trailer and load theft were reported to the NSLLD, with the total value of stolen property exceeding .2100m.
