A COMPRESSION-IGNITION engine r-k having only one valve per' cylinder forms the subject of patent No. 883,457, The air charge and exhaust gases are prevented from mixing by the shape of
the passages. (S. Dobrosavljevic, Perside. Milenkovic, Belgrade, Yugoslavia.) A passage (I) extends completely across the top of the cylinder. The apparent obstruction (2) is merely a central pillar of aerofoil cross-section in the passage.
Charging air enters (under pressure) from the left and is guided into the valve by a deflector (3). This is of crescent section and its hollow side turns the exhaust gases to the right while the incoming air flows around the convex face.
In plan, the passage is generally narrow at the two ends, becoming somewhat bulbous in the middle.
