SEVEN northern haulage concerns successfully appealed to the Transport Tribunal in London on Tuesday against a decision of the Northern Licensing Authority.' An addition of two vehicles to the •A licence of Messrs. T. Brady and Sons, Barrow-in-Ftirriess; had been granted and the Tribunal's reversal will take effect in two months.
The appellants were: Messrs. E. Nelson and Sons, Arnside; Messrs. Athersmith Bros., Barrow; Messrs. Park Bros., Uklerstone; Messrs. J. Wardley and Sons, Milnthorpe; W. R. Brailsford and Co., Ltd., Carnforth; J. B. Hudson, Ltd.; Manthorpe; and Messrs. T. F. Shaw, Lindalein-Cartmel.
Mr. T. 'H. Campbell Wardlaw, for the appellants, said that the ground for the appeal was the failure to 'establish need. The grant had followed an application for four vehicles, and an amendment to the normal user had also been. allowed.
For Brady, -Mr.. C. R. Beddington said that they' were a busylaulagi firth working under intolerable pressure. They had put their'• vehicles to heavy use between Barrow and Liverpool. One vehicle had been driven 600 miles in 24 hours.
• Mr. Beddington added that the British Cellophane Co. had opened a new factory in Barrow. This would prove a new source of traffic for Brady. There was no alternative means for transport other. than by rail, and no objection had been raised from that quarter.
Sir Hubert Hull, president, said he would V.ve full judgment in December.
