QVERSEAS requirements have inspired the design by Guy Motors, Ltd., Wolverhampton, of a new underfloorcngined bus chassis for single-deck bodies. The new 11-ft.-6-in,-wheelbase model known as the Seal will, 'however, be offered on the home market as well. It is powered by the Perkins Six 305 engine in horizontal form. The 5-litre, 87-b.h.p. engine is mounted in unit with a David Brown five-speed constant-mesh gearbox, which has an overdrive top ratio of 0.82 to 1.
The rear axle is a spiral-bevel unit with a ratio of 5.51 to 1. Suspension is by leaf springs front and rear, assisted by telescopic shock absorbers at both axles. Vacuum assistance is provided for the braking system, which has the relatively large braking area of 436 sq. in. for a vehicle running at a permissible .gross weight of 8i tons.
Chassis longitudinals are 9-in.-deep channel-section members ' with 3-in. flanges pressed from *-in.-thick material. They are braced by five channel-section cross-members and one tubular member which forms the rear engine support. Standard tyre equipment is 7.50-20 in. (12-ply) all round.
Cam-and-roller steering gear of 18-to-1 ratio gives a turning circle between kerbs of 49 ft. The Seal chassis, which weighs 2 tons 9 cwt., can carry a 24-ft, body.
