HERR1NG was being dumped into the sea locally because of lack of transport, said a Tarbert (Loch Fyne) haulier, Mr. John Arnott, when he applied to the Scottish Licensing Authority for a licence to carry coal, herring_ and road and building materials within a radius of 100 miles.
Mr. Arnott stated that he wished to convey the herring by road to Glasgow, Asked ' by Mr. A. Henderson, the Licensing Authority, whether he could mention any case where the Government's Road Haulage Organization failed to cover requirements in the collection and delivery of fish, Mr. Arnott replied that plenty of fish had to be dumped, and quoted a recent occasion. He admitted, however, that little herring had been landed at Tarbert since January of this year.
The application was refused.
