r1RST described in "The Commercial st Motor" on April 18, 1947, the Berger hydraulic engine starter is now being manufactured in this country under the name of Bryce-Berger by Bryce Fuel Injection, Ltd., I r onharks Works, Staines.
At a demonstration given last week, the device was shown fitted to a number of stationary and industrial units, but it is equally applicable to roadvehicle engines. Its principle of operation is that fluid under pressure is applied to two opposed and staggered pistons carrying racks which engage with a pinion on the crankshaft of the engine.
The starting torque is transmitted to the crankshaft via a dog clutch which engages before the full pressure is applied to the pistons. There is, therefore, no noise from the starter when an engine is started up.
