IT IS TYPICAL of the country that has done more than almost any other to develop the diesel engine to its present excellence, that it should be left to Fiat of Italy to introduce a 1,300cc diesel-engined car to be built in Brazil. It will not be sold in Britain, partly because dery is so costly here.
If the Government was sincere in its efforts to encourage fuel economy it would cut the tax on dery and stimulate the sale of small diesel-engirted cars that, according to the ECE standard, achieve as much as 44mpg on local running.
Instead, gas power is to be made a luxury for domestic and industrial users under the transparent guise of encouraging fuel economy. A tax on feet of clay might be more to the point.
