I-1 A SYSTEM of making packing cases

by using standard-sized panels held together by special fasteners is now being marketed in the U.K. by Export Packing Services Ltd., 56 Kingsway, London, W.C.2. The main part of the system is the type of clip used to join the panels. These were developed by Navan Products Inc. in the U.S., where they have the trade name of Klimp fasteners; Export Packing has given the system the name Klampex.

Panels for the system are made from plywood — exterior grade, 4 mm. or 6 mm. thick is used for Klampex—with 2.6875-in. by 0-6875-in. battens at all four edges. Intermediate battens are fitted where the panel exceeds 2 ft. 4 in. in length.

A range of 50 sizes of panel, from I ft. by 1 ft. to 4 ft. 6 in. by 2 ft. 6 in,, is made and these allow 400 sizes of case to be made. • Two styles of case can be made—the difference is in the method of locating the panels—and with style " A " the maximum size of case which can be made is 4 ft. 6 in. by 21t. 4 in. by 2 ft. 6 in. high whilst with style " B" the

Versatile Cutting Torch

riA NEW hand cutting-torch, the SIFGriesheim "Plus ", has been introduced by Suffolk Iron Foundry (1920) Ltd., Stowmarket, Suffolk. It is suitable for operation with oxygen or acetylene, or with any other fuel gases such as propane and coal gas and has a cutting range of 0.125 in. to 10in. thickness.

The SIF-Griesheim " Plus ' is made throughout in brass with a stainless steel head. It is designed on the injector principle and operates at 2:5 lb. fuel gas pressure, which is said to eliminate backfiring completely. The cutting lever, which is on the top side and is depressed for cutting, has a special quick-release fitting, and it is easy to operate. The grip, also made from brass, is fluted, and this renders it firm but comfortable to handle.

Nozzles are solid, of the single-piece type, made of copper, and special nozzles are available for whatever gas is to be used. The standard torch is supplied with one nozzle for cutting 0125 in. to I in. thick metal; nozzles for greater B32 maximum size is 2 ft. 6 in. by 2 ft. 4 in. by 2 ft. 4 in. high. Special sizes can be supplied to order in particular cases.

Making cases by using standard-sized panels has become known as Modular Panel Packaging and is the latest development in the field. By using Klampex panels and clips there are advantages over previous methods in a number of ways. The cases are easily dismantled for transport Or storage so reducing bulk, there is virtually no damage as there would be if the panels were nailed "together and the cases are easy to assemble—all that is needed is a hammer to drive the clips home.

Not all of the sizes of panel available would be needed; a concern using cases would order those sizes consistent with the range of cases used. Another point is that firms at present making cases by earlier methods could dispense with their saw mill.

As an example of the cost of a case, the .biggest " B" type-2 ft. 6 in. by 2 ft. 4 in. by 2 ft. 4 in.—would cost £2 12s. 6d. for the six panels and clips needed to make it.

thicknesses are available on request.

A new booklet issued by Suffolk Iron Foundry gives full details of all Sifbronze products including SIF regulators, Demon blowpipes and accessories as well as the SIF-Griesheim range of equipment.

Alternative Michelin Remoulds

AN alternative remould process has been introduced by the Michelin Tyre Co. Ltd. for its giant " X " casings. This differs from the existing Rebuildex process in which all the steel crown plies under the tread are replaced.

With the new process, some but not all the plies may be replaced and it is emphasized by Michelin that only a thorough examination by its staff can show which process has to be used.

Examples of prices for the two processes are: 8.25-16 " X ", Rebuildex £19 5s.. Remould £13 1 ls.; 9.00-20 "X ", Rebuildex £21 10s. 6d., Remould f15 13s.

Hydraulic Pumps

ARANGE of small capacity hydraulic gear pumps incorporating many new design features has been developed by Joseph Young and Sons Ltd., Kay Street, Bolton, Lancs. Suitable for either portable or static application, the units, which are of the constant displacement type. are intended primarily for mediumand heavy-duty operation on mechanical handling equipment.

Three models are included in the new range. These have capacities of 1.4 g.p.m., 2.1 g.p.m. and 2.75 g.p.m., all at 1,000 r.p.m. All operate at pressures up to 2,000 p.s.i. A feature of the pumps is that maximum, pressure over long periods can be maintained by patented pressure-balanced cheek plates which are positioned by flanges machined in the pump body to give a small clearance between the plates and gear faces. Under pressure this gap closes evenly and squarely thus avoiding uneven pressure loading on the cheek plates and so keeping starting friction low and ensuring maximum operating efficiency. When used as a source of hydraulic power for battery-electric vehicles the cheek plates reduce friction-loss, so saving current and prolonging the life of the batteries.

A Help in Snow

A WINDSCREEN-WIPER blade intro ri by Joseph Lucas Ltd. has been developed to overcome the problem of snow becoming packed in and freezing up the metal vertebrae of normal type blades. Called the Arctic, it is a normal wiper blade with the whole metal portion covered in a flexible black rubber skin, preventing the snow getting to it.

The blades, which are not intended for continued use throughout the year, are available for the 11-in, wrist-action blade size. They cost 12s. 6d. each.
