• Paccar has signed a long-term deal with Cummins for the supply of heavy-duty Signature, ISX and ISM engines; this could be the end of the line for Paccar-owned Daf's current range of heavy truck engines. However, Dar in the UK insists that these engines will stay in production.
Paccar would save money by adopting a common engine strategy across its Oaf, Foden, Kemyorth and Peterbilt brands, and Cummins engines are already fitted to lighter Oaf models such as the new IF series.
But Oaf builds its own CF arid XF ranges of heavy-duty engines, and Daf's UK marketing director Tony Pain is adamant that these will remain: "It has more impact for Kenworth, Peterbilt and Foden, I don't see any direct effect in it for Oaf."
The Xf range goes up to 530hp while Cummins offers engines up to 600hp, but Pain insists that Oaf doesn't need them: "I don't see any reason to change—we go every bit as high as we want to go and the XF engine has a bit of room to grow. In any case, less than 5% of the tractive unit market is over 500hp."
