QIX men. were committed for trial at
Surrey Assizes (opening on February 12), at Croydon Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, accused of defrauding the Crown of £38,508 duty on diesel fuel oil. They were all remanded on bail of £500 each (see The Commercial Motor, December 4. 1964, page 56).
The men are: John H. Churchill, Addiscombe; Leslie W. Churchill, Croydon; Alexander J, Londe'', Chatham, Kent; John E, Baker, Hatfield, Herts; Joseph Stock, London, N.; and Louis Margo, Streatham, London, The presiding magistrate, Mr. George Williams, said that two other men, Victor G. Churchill, junior, London, S.W., and Albert E. Proctor, Hanworth, Middlesex—who were not in court— would be committed for trial, accused of the same offence, on Wednesday.
Mr. Williams said that an order would be made for a Bill-of Indictment against seven companies on a charge of conspiracy. The companies would answer the charge at Surrey Assizes. They are: Universal Fuel Oils Ltd., Croydon:
Olympic Petroleum Co. Ltd., London, W.; J. E. Baker Transport (1959) Ltd., Stratford, London; Baker's Road Services Ltd., Broad Street Avenue, London, E.C.: Hill Crest Haulage Ltd., Londen, B.C.; Metro Taxi Cabs Ltd., London, E.; and A. E. Proctor, Hanworth.
