Trade gossip tells me that something new in safety belts for van drivers is in the development stage: a design that does away with the manual on-and-off stuff.
We shall see. Meantime I've heard a complaint that van drivers who might be inclined to use existing safety belts are discouraged by the fact that, unless a belt is of the automatic variety which gives free body movement, the driver has to slip the buckle when he wants to lean forward and look left on approaching a road junction at an acute angle. While some buckles can be freed single-handed, the positive-lock type demands two hands and so can't safely be disengaged as he tootles up to the junction.
Fitting windows in van sides would overcome the objection—but then we're into all that purchase tax lark, aren't we. What you might call "paying safe"?
