Was it the sheer pulling power of CM; or a sudden glut of service engineers; or that engineering staffs are grossly underpaid and always looking for greener pastures? I can't say, but there must have been something special about the appeal of a classified ad. in our January 26 issue, because I see that the box-number advertiser put another one in the February 16 issue to thank the applicants and apologize for being unable to answer the flood of letters individually.
This happy advertiser is only identifiable as an East Coast haulier; perhaps the applicants fancied the salt breezes and bracing air. Reading through the classified columns confirms my suspicion that it is more likely the prospect of a higher salary that brought the response. Significantly, one company offers £35 a week for top-grade fitters while another blandly offers £29 for a manager "with comprehensive knowledge of road transport operation".
Is the power and the glory worth that differential?
