OPERATORS can look forward to a wider choice of ferry routes between Britain and Ireland later this year, when two Irish ferry operators are expected to introduce new routes.
13+1 Line, the Republic's semistate shipping company, is intro ducing a Dublin-Holyhead crossing on March 1, probably using the vessels which are run on the existing Dublin-Liverpool crossing.
The service, which will be run in competition with Sealink, will make more efficient use of the vessels, which will still run on the longer Liverpool route, and B+I hopes that its 1R£6m (£4.86m) loss will be reduced by running this service.
Another Republic operator, Irish Shipping Ltd, plans to establish a new subsidiary which will take over the abandoned Belfast-Liverpool cross ing run by P&O Ferries. It would be operated from April using a ferry from its Irish Continental Line's Rosslare-Cherbourg crossing, and would be capable of handling lorries. P&O's vessel was unsuitable for ro/ro lorry traffic.
