COMMERCIAL VEHICLE manufacturers appeared in buoyant mood at last week's RAI Show in Amsterdam, despite the poor underlying levels of economic activity on the Continent.
Their mood was summed up by Eckhard Cordes, chief of Daim lerChrysler's CV division."A difficult economic climate is not the time to do nothing," he told the press in Amsterdam.
"We have been very active and this is seen in our registering a €200m operating profit in the second quarter of 2003, which is better than the whole year in 2002! "The third quarter looks to be sustaining this level of business and we expect the final quarter to be equally positive. We are very hopeful for the future."
Jim Cardillo, boss of Daf Trucks in Holland. echoed the words of his German competitor when CM spoke with him last week: "Business is very tough but we are performing strongly. There are areas for improvement for Daf Trucks throughout Europe, particularly in the rigid sector. Now with our full line-up in place I think we can look forward to some signs of growth in those areas."
