IN THE NEWS

Take a stroll with us through the untravelled byways of road transport; the diversions and detours, the quirky, the quixotic and the downright strange...

For some reason protest marches always seem to attract self-delusional types and megaphone diplomats. So it was with no great surprise that CMS reporter turned up at the T&G union's latest 'trudge for the workers' to have his eardrums shattered by one man and his megaphone.

To recap, the march was expected to culminate with the presentation of a petition to Tony Blair calling for shorter working hours for road transport workers under the banner 'Fatigue Kills'. Sadly, only a coachload turned up and Mr Blair's meeting with Irish PM Bertie Ahern overran (slogan, 'Terrorism Kills') so handing over the petition was postponed.

Of course this didn't stop one deluded T&G firebrand from standing at the entrance to Downing Street and bellowing: "Come out and face us Blair! Show your face, come out, you coward! Why don't you want to see us Blair, frightened are you?" We imagine that on hearing this slur on his character Tony made his excuses to Bertie, put Ireland on hold and went straight out to chat with shouty-man and his comrades.

Opening its latest factory, trailer maker Don-Bur came up with a cunning publicity wheeze (no, not getting Tory zealot John Redwood to open the site) involving adding its logo to bars of Cadbury's perennial snack-time favourite the wait for itDouble Decker.

Unfortunately ours returned to the office in the capable hands of CM 's editor-in-chief Brian Weatherley which is why its now somewhat irregularly shaped, giving the impression that it might well have been sat on for a few hours.

Speaking of the E-in-C, he turns 50 this month and those kindly folk at lveco took a moment at the RAI truck show to present Brian with a gift for his half-century: a one-hour 'landaway' flying lesson with CabAir from Redhill aerodrome.

And from us, many happy returns to the old duffer.
