An example of the German Vidal chassisless bulk-handling semitrailer, this particular one having a Mercedes-Benz tractive unit. As can be seen, the swivelling rear conveyor is stowed alongside the body when not in use.

A NEW range of multi-cargo bulk
carrying chassisless semi-trailers with high-speed discharge equipment is to be marketed in Britain. The designs have been specially developed for use in the U.K. by the manufacturers, Herbert Vidal und Co., Ham burg-Harburg, and will be handled in this country by Herbert Vidal and Co. (Great Britain) Ltd., 120 High Street, Edgware, Middlesex. Two types of semi-trailers for use with any appropriately powered British short-wheelbase tractive unit are to be imported, and features include the ability to carry two or more different types of load simultaneously and a high discharge rate which n22 enables a full 14-ton payload to be emptied by one man in only 15 minutes.
There are two conveyor belts. One runs beneath the whole length of the body, and the compartment openings above it span the full 16-in, width of the conveyor. Adjustable shutters control the size of the compartment openings to regulate the flow, but the full width of the conveyor belt is always employed. Loads are carried to the end of the vehicle on the main conveyor and passed on to a second conveyor which can swing laterally through 180. This conveyor is supported by a hydraulically operated jib, enabling it to be lowered 15° or raised 35° from the horizontal, and the belt assembly is stowed alongside the container when not in use. Both conveyors are hydraulically powered, the pump being mounted on the tractive unit. The controls on the semi-trailer allow the conveyor-belt speed and direction of revement to be varied.
Payloas for these Vidal "trimmers" range from 10 to 14 tons, with struck capacities of from 618 to 706 cu ft., the respective heaped capacities being 692 to 876 Cu. ft. The short semi-trailer has a length of 23 ft. 5-5 in., and the other model is 27 ft. 3 in. long: in both cases the overall width is 8 ft.
