Overall savings of 30-40 per cent in road goods transport are envisaged in a study called -The Motor Vehicle 1980-2000which has been conducted in Sweden under the aegis of the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences. These economies could apparently be achieved by a combination of improvements in vehicles and greater produce tivity in road haulage.
My friend Robin Dickeson, of Scania (Great Britain) Ltd, tells me "Diesel buses are shown to be far and away the most economical means of transportation at fairly low passenger flows — which gives rise to the suggestion that it might be possible to combine the advantages both of buses and tracked systems by using "bus-trainsrunning on their own right of way."
These sound to me suspiciously like trams.
