Medical Research Council into air pollution, including the effects of diesel -and petrol fumes, had not so far demonstrated that these fumes had any immediate or long term deleterious effects. This was stated in the Commons by Mr. Ernest Marples in reply to a question from Dr. A. Thompson (Lab. Dunfermline), writes our Parliamentary correipondent.
Mr. Marples refused a proposal that he should bring in legislation to prohibit emission of black exhaust fumes. The law, he said, already prohibited emission by vehicles of fumes likely to cause injury or danger to persons who might be on the road.
Mr. Marples also stated that he expected " shortly " to receive the reply of the British Transport Commission to the recommendations of the Select Committee which recently inquired into the financial structure of British Railways.
