0 of the matters that will be con
sidered by the long-term study group set up by the Ministry of Transport were mentioned by Mr. Ernest Marples, Minister of Transport, when he opened Castrol House, the new headquarters of the Wakefield Castrol group, in London on Monday. They were:—
(1) The provision of off-street car parks.
(2) Multi-level traffic circulation and the segregation of pedestrians from wheeled vehicles.
He congratulated Wakefield's on providing more car-parking space than was required by regular users. He suggested also that pavements in busy shopping streets should be built on cantilever structures at first-floor level, thus widening the carriageway and promoting safety for pedestrians. He favoured an experiment of this nature in an existing street.
The problem of living with 15m. vehicles in 1975 would not be solved by new road engineering alone, although the latest traffic-engineering techniques would be applied in London this year, Every ingredient that went into the creation of a community was involved.
