CAPITAL spending by the Government on roads will total E743m next year, compared with £718m in 1984/85.
Local authority capital spending on roads will rise just Ellm to £502m.
Total Department of Transport spending next year is said to be £824m, which will rise to £870m and then £890m in the following years.
Total spending on road transport in 1983 reached E46bn, of which 55 pr cent was business use.
The Public Spending White Paper says that the Government should be able to continue to make progress in pursuing its objectives, provided the increase in road construction prices stays at the same level as in recent years.
But it warns that this could be threatened if the recent sharp increase in bitumen prices was not reversed.
