A LAST-MINUTE entry on the Mack stand at the NEC is the F886SZ 6x4 tractive unit for special use at up to 200 tons gross. Because of problems in preparing the vehicle for the Show, it was touch-and-go whether the new Mack would actually be present at all.
The normal gross weight is 150 tons, although Mack claims an occasional rating at 200 tons for use approximately 5 per cent of the time. At this upper weight, a bogie life of 4,000 hours between overhauls can be expected, according to Mack.
The engine is a Mack ETAB 676 B six-cylinder turbocharged diesel which develops 228kW (306bhp) at 1,800 rpm with a max torque of 1,560Nm (1,150lb ft) at 1,200rpm, both figures ling net to BSAU 141a. This *Ives through a Brockhonse torque converter and a 12-speed Maxitorque splitter box.
Including ballast box, the new Mack has a kerb weight of around 11 tons and costs 00,000.
