"
YOUR company owes a moral obligation to the people there to continue the service," said Mr. J. D. Daniell, for Dover Rural District Council, when he opposed the application of the East Kent Road Car Co.,
Ltd., for a renewal of their licence to operate a service between Deal and Kingsdown, subject to discontinuing the service from the middle of September to Whitsun.
Mr. Daniel) said that it was one of the first provincial bus services in the country. It had been discontinued about 1932 because of the condition of the road. " Did you know," he asked Mr. P. W. Dodge, traffic manager, "that because
of that a public subscription among the people of Kingidown was made so that the road couldbe rebuilt and taken over by the local authority for buses te start again'?"
The South Eastern Licensing Authority, Mr. H. J. Thom, said he had seldom heard of a service of 12 jour. ncys a day being completely withdrawn in the winter. He added, however, that 12 journeys did not appear to be justified.
Mr. M Dodge said that a check hae shown an average of only 1.15 passen• gers on each inward journey, and a normal maximum of five, with eight passengers on one occasion, on the outward journey.
The Authority reserved his decision until the company and the council agreed to the continuation of a service of some kind throughout the year.
