THE TRANSPORT Minister has been urged to ensure that some of the leases for motorway service areas go to operators in France, Germany and Italy "who run their services with such flair and imagination."
The suggestion came from John Hunt MP (Conservative, Ravensbourne), who said there would be widespread disappointment if the leases went to the ''same dreary lot" who operated the areas at present.
But the most that Norman Fowler would say was that he took on board what Mr Hunt had said. He pointed out that the reason why a change of policy was being sought was due to the failure of the operations over the last 20 years.
The Department was trying to open up the motorway service areas to new competition with the aim of getting a better service.
