AN application by Watsons (Carriers), Ltd., Bishop Auckland, to operate another four vehicles to cope with increased business was adjourned by the Northern Licensing Authority at Darlington.
The application was supported by Paton and Baldwins, Ltd., Colgate Palmolive, and Nabisco Foods, Ltd. Mr. R. P. Stancliffe, warehouse manager for Paton and Baldwins, said that after 30 years' experience, he had come to the conclusion that rail transport was best for long hauls, but the actual delivery to customers had to be made by private road carriers.
He contended that British Railways could not make deliveries as promptly as private road hauliers.
Mr. Stancliffe said he was not in favour of transport firms sub-contracting work to other firms, because if there was a delay "it was the devil's delight trying to find out who was responsible."
Mr. K. Watson, a director of Watsons (Carriers), Ltd., said that his company had to hire vehicles from other firms and an extra four vehicles at least were needed to meet their increasing business.
The application was opposed by British Railways and British Road Services. The Authority also postponed consideration of an application by Burn Brothers, Richmond, Yorks.
