EEC member countries need no longer make frontier checks on third-party insurance liability (the green card) for vehicles normally based in Hungary, Czechoslovakia and the German Democratic Republic.
Drivers should, however, carry the green card or evidence of third-party insurance, so that these documents can be produced in the event of a spot check on frontiers or elsewhere. The national insurers' bureaux in the member States have undertaken to settle all claims relating to damage or injury caused on their territory by motor vehicles from Hungary, Czechoslovakia or East Germany. These three East European countries plan to introduce legislation to abandon frontier controls of third-party insurance concerning incoming vehicles from member States of the EEC.
