N E.E.C. survey, in 1960, into the operating costs of 18-20-ton vehicles perating 100,000 kilometres a year lowed a difference of £10 per ton etween France (with the highest costs) nd the Netherlands (the lowest).
Revealing this in a paper on interational haulage, given to the North Jestern (Eastern) area of the Road laulage Association in Manchester on uesday, Mr. R. H. Insoll. executive :cretary of the R.H.A., commented that tis disparity I in costs would have to be arrowed if any headway was going to e made within the Common Market on armonization of rates.
The figures revealed by Mr. Insoll were: fetherlands, 1.78s. per mile; Belgium, .24s.; Italy, 2.30s.; Germany, 3.16s.; ranee, 3.79s.
Speaking of probable licensing changes tat would result from Britain's entry ito the Market, Mr. Insoll said that one robability was that our licensing would ave to be based on carrying capacity and ot unladen weight, so as to tie up with le Continent.
Broadly speaking, it appeared that the letherlands were in favour of maximum .eedom whilst France and Germany anted controls.
