PATENT No. 855,553 shows an engine of the swash-plate type in which both the valve porting and the compression ratio are automatically adjusted to suit the prevailing engine speed. (United Engines, Ltd., 52-53 Jermyn Street, London, S.W.1.) The drawing, which is only diagrammatic, shows cylinders having opposed pairs of pistons which act on swashplates (1 and 2). The engine operates on the two-stroke cycle, being charged through cylinder ports (3) and exhausting through others (4).
The innermost edge of each port is fixed, but the width of opening can be varied by slidable liners (5). These are interposed between cylinder and piston
and their position can be ..s,aried by levers (6) operated by an hydraulic servo-motor (7).
The compression can be varied by moving the left-hand swashplate bodily along straight splines (8) and the right hand one along helical pins (9). This gives a phase dis placement as well as a compression change. The displacement of the swash plates is by a second servo-motor. The action of both the servo-motors is primarily controlled by a governor responsive to engine speed.
