Take the time to draw up a good set of policies and systems. It usually takes many hours, even for a specialist.
2 Present the policies to staff with enthusiasm and conviction.
3 Once the policy is in place investigate whether there are any training needs due to non-compliance.
4 Lead from the front — if you cannot follow your rules, why should your staff?
5 Deliberate rule breaking should be dealt with by your disciplinary procedures so your risk policy needs to link in with your employment contracts. Explain this when the changes are implemented to allow staff to raise any issues they are unsure about.
6 Investigate accidents to discover whether there could be an underlying cause. This can be incorrect work schedules, wrong vehicle type, driver personal problems or management practices.
7 Continually revisit your policies and systems, check they are still valid and safe and take note of any feedback from your collision investigations.
