ROA D haulage last year moved 1,430m. tons IAof inland freight-82 per cent of the total. Mr. John Morris, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, giving this total in the Commons last week, added that the railways took 229m. tons. 14 per cent.
Ton mileages were 41 thousand million (59 per cent) for the roads and 16.4 thousand million (24 per cent) for the railways.
The average haul was 30 miles by road and 70 by rail.
Mr. Morris emphasized that these were provisional figures. as were those he gave for passenger transport by bus and coach in 1965.
This came to 38 thousand million passenger miles. compared with 135 thousand million by car and motorcycle, 22 thousand million by rail and one thousand million by air.
