British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers held its annual dinner-dance. attended by over 500 persons.
Sir Frederick Handley Page, C.B.E.„ said that he was glad that the function had been delayed from the evening of the General Election. because it had now become almost a victory celebration, but whether the colour was red or blue, it was satisfactory to find the great general interest in coachbuilding.
Referring to the new Government, he said, "Leave them to it and see what they can do with the mess they have made." Comparing political conditions with an aeroplane, he said this had left and right wings and depended upon both for its support, but went steadily on with its control and power at its centre.
We were beginning to see the dawn of a new life, and we were really going to put this country back on the map, where it ought tc be.
Mr. Edwin Fox, F.I.B.C.M., president. said that the coachbuilding and aircraft industries were allied. Never was the Institute in a happier position. Additional membership in 1949 was double that of the previous year, and it owed a great deal to the immediate past president, Mr. A. T. Froggatt, M.B.E.
Mr. W. M. Park, Master, the Worshipful Company of Coachbuilders and Coach Harness Makers, responded.
