I N a statement urging continued opposition from the public against the nationalization of road passenger transport, the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., states: "The public may rest assured that this company will not apply for increased fares, short of a major change either in operating costs or in the volume of traffic, both of which changes would be outside its control."
The statement referred to the fact that the Gateshead and District Tramways Co., Ltd. (an associated concern of the Northern General) intended" running buses; instead of trains, at fares which had not been raised since 1920. These worked out at Id. a mile for ordinary passengers and :Id. for workmen's fares.
