SOME 600 Glasgow Corporation bus crews, members of a breakaway movement, may tear up their union cards over a dismissal notice on one of their members.
But the transport department and the TGWU have warned them that if they did so the men would be sacking themselves.
The man who received notice is Mr. James Scott, who works at Hampden garage and is an organizer of the Bus Crews' Association. The notice takes effect on March 19.
A spokesman for the breakaway movement, who refused to give his name, said that a mass meeting had been called for next Sunday, March 6. "We have about 600 members", he said, "and have registered ourselves as a union. The Corporation does not operate a closed shop, yet Mr. Scott had been given notice because he refused to be a member of the TGWU."
