FRONI she Hawker Siddeley company Of Hands (Letchworth) Ltd. comes news that there is to be added to the range of straight frame trailers announced in The Commercial Motor on July 2 a standard range of step-frame units with capacities of 6, 8, 10. 12, 14 and 16 tons. The 6and 8-ton models will he equipped with single-axle running gear and the remainder with tandem-axle units. In each case the axles will be of a standard design incorporating 12* in.-

diameter by 5 in.-wide brakes. Brake operation by vacuum will • he optional, compressed air operation• being the standard fitting.

The range will offer well-lengths of 18, 20, 23 and 25 ft., and the 16-ton unit will be plated.

Great strides have been made at the factory in the programme of standardiza

tion of component parts and the company hopes shortly to be in the position to oiler semi-trailers from stock. A network of distributors is being set up and these will be capable of supplying spare parts should they be required. All units up to and including 12 tons capacity can be fitted with the Hands Auto-Safe coupling in place of a fifth-wheel. Larger models are restricted to the fifth-wheel coupling. As on the straight-frame models, two-speed landing gear is fitted as standard equipment and the electrical installation includes the use of waterproof junction boxes.

The company also supplies the American-designed, British-built HandsNeway tandem-axled spring-beam -suspension unit as a sub-frame mounted running gear for use on frameless vans. tanker bodies and the like.
