It's common knowledge around the haulage industry that LAs are taking an increasingly dim view of speeding and drivers' hours offences by operators and drivers alike.
That policy has been reflected by the sort of ". penalties being imposed on LGV drivers who appear before them following such offences.
In the North East Traffic Area, for example, a driver's licence was suspended for twoand-a-half years following his conviction for false records. The decision was upheld on appeal to the local magistrates.
Another driver's licence was suspended for two-and-a-half
ik months for a single offence of
W speeding, made worse by a Vehicle Inspectorate report that tachograph checks indicated he was a regular offender.
All the evidence indicates that speeding and driver fatigue contribute to road accidents. Drivers and operators should be aware that the LAs getting tougher when dealing with these offences— and rightly so.
It's easy to see bending the rules as part of the job in a competitive industry; but these regulations are there for everyone's benefit. Anyone caught breaking them deserve what's coming to them.
