A new type of fastener called TapIt which is said to be particularly suitable for fixing number plates and mud flaps has been introduced by the US Expansion Bolt Co. (GB). The Tap-It can be used as a fixing in hollow or solid material to replace "pop" rivets, self-tapping screws and nuts and bolts.
The fastener comprises a zincplated drive screw which is tapped home through the pre-drilled bead of a nylon plug. This action expands the shank of the plug which is split along its length and gives a secure expansion fastening. To remove a Tap-It, the drive screw is unscrewed and the nylon plug removed: both components can be re-used.
