NOBODY would accuse the road haulage industry of radical thinking but the National Freight Consortium will, I believe, help to make industrial history in Britain in being owned and controlled by its employees. And the credit must go first to Peter . Thomson, vice-chairman and chief executive of the national Freight Co, as its architect.
The consortium's 56-page illustrated prospectus, of which some 44,000 copies have been individually addressed to employees and pensioners, is a model of lucidity and an historic document. I detect in it the editorial skill and inspiration of Brian Cottee, former editor of Commercial Motor and now NFC's head of communication services and a member of the consortium's organising committee.
The prospectus is being further explained at more than 300 local meetings — apart from 500 held last year to float the idea — at which a new video film is being shown. If employees are still not convinced that they should grab this opportunity to invest in their own future at a bargain price, they will surrender their credibility.
