THE voluntary "observer corps" patrols organized by the Road Haulage Association to assist the police in preventing lorry thefts began operations in various parts of London last Monday.
Nearly 50 road haulage firms combined to supply cars and staff for the operations. The staff were allocated to hauliers' depots with the instruction to report any lorry thefts immediately by 999 call to Scotland Yard's information
room.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Joseph Simpson, described the operation as a perfect example of crime prevention co-operation between industry and police.
